Rainbow Rooms

What are Rainbow Rooms?

Rainbow Rooms are 24/7 resource centers located within your local Department of Family and Protective Services/Child Protective Services (CPS) offices.  The majority of children who are removed from homes due to abuse and/or neglect, are removed in an emergency situation, and are not able to bring anything with them.  The Rainbow Room allows the child's caseworker the opportunity to get clothing and other basic necessities for the child take with them to their new foster home.  Rainbow Rooms also help the new foster family, as oftentimes children are placed so quickly, and the family has received so little information, that a frantic and immediate trip to the store is just not possible.  Rainbow Rooms rely on donations and volunteers from the community and local churches, to keep this incredible ministry running.

Why "Rainbow"?

Rainbow Rooms are "a ray of hope in a child's dreams." Abused and neglected children do not deserve abused and neglected things. By supporting your local Rainbow Room, you can be a ray of hope to these children, too!

Because children placed into foster care range in age from newborn to 18, there is a wide range of sizes and items needed for the Rainbow Rooms.  Rainbow Rooms only accept NEW items! (Due to limited storage space in most of the CPS offices, please try to limit your clothing donations to the current season.)

Rainbow Rooms are always welcoming the following items:

  • Diapers and Wipes
  • Bottles
  • Pacifiers
  • Car seats
  • Blankets**
  • Formula
  • Clothing - Baby (girl/boy)*
  • Clothing - Toddler (girl/boy)
  • Clothing - Elementary/Middle School (girl/boy)
  • Clothing - Teen (Men's, Women's, and even Plus sizes, for some of our older teens)*
  • Pajamas**
  • School Supplies
  • Shoes
  • Socks
  • Underwear/Bras
  • Jackets
  • Personal Hygiene Items (deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.)**
  • Children's Books and Toys
  • Portable Pack-n-Play's**

*Some items that are hard to come by in Rainbow Rooms include newborn and preemie sizes, for infants, and then plus sizes, for older and possibly overweight teenagers.

**Oftentimes, children must spend the night in their local CPS office, or even in a local motel, with their caseworker until a foster home is found.  In these cases, pack-n-plays for babies, blankets, personal hygiene items, undergarments, and pajamas are extremely important to have available.

Rainbow Rooms are always receiving new donations.  With the overwhelming caseload that most CPS caseworkers have, there is no time to keep the Rainbow Rooms organized.  CPS caseworkers rely on community and church volunteers to keep the Rainbow Rooms organized, and up to date.  There are even wish-lists that have been created on Amazon, for needed items for each of the Rainbow Rooms, in our area!
